Message from the President As I flagged in last month’s President’s Report the last month has had a number of significant events in Cheltenham.
I attended the sod turning ceremony for the start of the Real Tennis
court at the Cheltenham Recreation Club on June 18th and then only a
short time later I attended the 110th Anniversary of the
commencement of the club. If you want to know more about Bill Harris,
the philanthropist who donated the grounds for the club go to the
History Group web site at CLICK HERE and CLICK HERE. Both of these events were impressive and very enjoyable.
Then at Cheltenham Girls High School Louise and I attended the most
recent concert of the Beecroft Orchestra. It was a delightful
combination of modern and classical orchestral music. It was well
delivered with warmth and great professional aplomb.
Hornsby Shire Council recently voted to allocate the remaining funds
from the sale of the former Cheltenham Congregational Church towards
commencement of the implementation of the Village Green Management Plan.
A previous Council had stated that these funds should be spent on the
Byles Creek Valley and so two resident surveys were conducted (one by
your Civic Trust and the other by the Humans of Beecroft and Cheltenham
Facebook page) to see if this approach accorded with resident views. The
surveys agreed (in one case) to no longer use the funds on Byles Creek
Valley and the other supported the use of the funds on the Village
Green. The Civic Trust is offering to assist Council in determining the
priority for the work on the Village Green – with an emphasis on
building the half court and for installing exercise equipment.
Parramatta City Council has recently installed a new footpath and built a
traffic calming crossing at the southern end of Orchard Road near the
North Carlingford shops. Again, this has proven to be a difficult
intersection and so we all hope that this will make an improvement to
safety.
The Civic Trust has not yet had any response to letters sent to the
respective new NSW State Ministers on M2 noise or the governance of
private certifiers. We are continuing our follow up on these
matters.
Elsewhere in this e-news is a survey about traffic management along
Beecroft Road. We are advocating for a red light and speed camera to be
installed for traffic traveling along Beecroft Road at the Hannah Street
intersection.
Finally it is with much sadness that I note the passing of Ian McLeod at
the end of June. Ian was one of our fellow residents who was
instrumental in the founding of the Beecroft Cheltenham History Group
and so made a great contribution to our local communities.

Beecroft’s New Electric Vehicle Charging Station
HORNSBY Shire Council has unveiled their new electric vehicle charging station in Beecroft. Close
to 900 electric vehicle owners live in the Hornsby Shire, Hornsby
Council suggests that this is a 41% increase over the last six
months.
Survey on Beecroft Road Traffic Management The
intersection of Beecroft Road and Hannah Streets has seen many traffic
collisions. Recently, a number of these have been fatal accidents.
Do you want the Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust to advocate for the
installation of a Red Light and Speed Camera to be installed on the
corner of Beecroft and Hannah Streets?
Results on the Survey on remaining funds from the sale of 179 Beecroft Road – the old Congregation Church We asked:

Beecroft Bush Dance The last Bush Dance was a huge success, the next on is planned for September.
Beecroft Orchestra’s Concert 2 for 2023 on 2 July, for the first time
having the space and acoustics of the new Cheltenham Girls High School
Performance Hall, was a great success.
The program started with one of Brahms’ gypsy-style ‘Hungarian Dances’
followed by Christopher Gordon’s ‘Ladies in Black Suite’, which is music
from the beautiful film of that name set in 1959 in the high-end Ladies
fashion section of a well-known Department Store in Sydney. The
Recorder Soloist, Alicia Crossley, performed in Georg Philipp Telemann’s
‘Suite in A Minor’ (with a pompous Overture being followed by a
haunting ‘Air A l’Italien’ and fast, boisterous ‘Rejouissance’) and in
the ‘Bilitis Movements’ (based on ‘Les Chansons de Bilitis’) by local
composer Lyle Chan. After a delightful afternoon tea came
Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, which Beethoven asserted was one of his best works, which came to a climax with a lively Presto and Allegro Con Brio.
This year, the orchestra initiated a Young Conductors’ Program. The
response to this has been astonishing and 4 young conductors were
selected to assist and learn from the orchestra’s Conductor, Dr Joanna
Drimatis - one in each musical term. Funds for this program come from
tax deductible donations to the orchestra’s Gift Fund which is
accessible through the Beecroft Orchestra Website.
